Tu-204 appeared in a difficult time for the country when there was a review not only of universal values but also a decline in the living standards of Russians. These processes had a strong impact on population migration, including the ability to make long-haul flights. The traditional airlines, which Tu-204 was counting on, became less busy, and Tu-154M completely coped with passenger flows. Trying to save the airplane, expand the geography of its use, Tupolev AO developed the Tu-204-300 variant with a shortened fuselage and an increased flight range. The prototype aircraft was shown in August 1995 at the MAKS-95 aerospace exhibition.

Tu-204-300 is designed to carry 166 passengers in a tourist class layout with the installation step of 810 mm seats, their luggage, and cargo on short, medium, and long-range routes. For nearby airlines, with a take-off mass of 84,800 kg and a maximum commercial load of 18,000 kg, the flight range is 2500-3500 km. For the transport of one passenger per kilometer spent 18.7-20 g of fuel. The machine can be operated from class “B” aerodromes with an 1800-meter runway and the corresponding allowable load on concrete, and more simply, from all regional airports.

Tu-204-300 provides passengers with a high level of comfort, due to the shape of the fuselage section, high comfortable seats with wide armrests, spacious luggage racks of a closed type, a modern air conditioning system, and a layout solution for the passenger compartment.

For passengers, there are several options for the layout of the cabin: a single tourist class, a single economic class, a mixed version with two classes (with the first and business), and a mixed version with three classes (with the first, business and tourist). Baggage and cargo are transported in five containers of type LD 3-46, which are located in the front and rear luggage and cargo compartments.

Even though the Tu-204-300 is designed for a crew of two people, it is possible to accommodate a flight engineer, pilot, or instructor in the cockpit. The cockpit is designed with ergonomics in mind, the dashboard is made using the latest technology. All information on aircraft control and on-board system operation is displayed on six multi-color on-screen liquid crystal displays. Instead of the steering columns, small V-shaped control knobs with small efforts and deviations are installed.

A feature of the Tu-204-300 was a keel or, as it is also called, a reserve fuel tank. For cars with incomplete fueling, flying on the middle lines, it is used to obtain more rear alignments and thereby reduce the aerodynamic loss on balancing. In the version of the aircraft for long-distance lines, fuel is poured, both in the keel and additional fuel tanks. The latter is installed instead of one of the containers in the rear cargo hold. In this option, the capacity of the water supply system also increases. Also, at the request of the airline, a crew rest area at the end of the passenger compartment can be equipped.

The modern technical level of the Tu-204-300 is ensured by perfect aerodynamics, PS-90A highly economical turbofan engines with low specific fuel consumption, the introduction of new structural and technological solutions, the use of advanced aluminum and titanium alloys, honeycomb structures and composite materials, the use of the latest flight and navigation equipment based on digital computing.

The promising multidisciplinary Tu-204-300 has high flight performance, low fuel consumption, low cost of organizing production, allowing it to be put into operation at the beginning of next year. The introduction of a progressive maintenance system (MRO) and operation as it is possible will reduce downtime for maintenance and repair and increase the serviceability of the aircraft fleet. At the same time, the high-intensity commercial operation is ensured.

The level of operational and technical data implemented at Tu-204-300 makes it possible to obtain high commercial operating efficiency, reduce direct operating costs by 15-20%, compared with analogous aircraft, which, along with high fuel efficiency, ensures its sufficient competitiveness. The possibility of modifying the car into a truck is not ruled out if the customer would have been.
