Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn

Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn is a lightweight multi-purpose French helicopter designed by Sud-Ouest in 1953.

The multipurpose aircraft model Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn was designed by French aircraft manufacturers in the early 50s of the last century. The project was developed solely based on the needs of the French army for small aircraft capable of performing patrol and reconnaissance tasks, and although the functionality of the Sud-Ouest SO1221 Djinn helicopter was very limited, the aircraft was highly demanded, as evidenced by the fact that for a relatively short period of production, 178 helicopters of this model were produced.

Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn made its first helicopter test flight in 1953. The aircraft completed all tests, and already in 1954 entered mass production, where after a series of test tests in the French Armed Forces, it began to be used in large quantities, and later it was completely sold to the armed forces of other countries, in particular Germany and Of Spain.

Due to its relatively compact size and lightweight but robust construction, the Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn helicopter has high maneuverability, however, its speed of movement is very limited.

The cabin of the helicopter Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn can accommodate only two people – a pilot and one soldier, however, as such, an aircraft for transporting large groups of people was not planned. If necessary, the helicopter can also carry out the transportation of small loads, moreover, this aircraft can do this both inside the cabin and on an external hitch, however, the payload cannot exceed 440 kilograms (taking into account the own weight of the pilot and one passenger).

Among other things, the helicopter Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn was also used to train future pilots, and, due to the simplicity of its control, this aircraft was the best suited for these purposes.

The helicopter model Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn is equipped with a power plant consisting of one aircraft engine of the brand Turbomeca Palouste IV, capable of developing a thrust of 240 hp When using such a power plant, the maximum speed of the aircraft is very limited and is only 130 km \ h., Which, however, taking into account the actual purpose of this aircraft, was considered very acceptable. The maximum flight range of the Sud-Ouest S.O.1221 Djinn helicopter is 220 kilometers, which to some extent limits the applicability of this aircraft.
