IAR 316

IAR 316 is a Romanian military multi-purpose helicopter designed in 1971 by the aircraft manufacturer Industria Aeronautica Romana.

The project of the multi-purpose helicopter model IAR 316 was created by Romanian aircraft manufacturers based on the French helicopter Aerospatiale SA 316B Alouette II, while the helicopter did not undergo any actual external changes, however, in-flight performance this model was more effective, and therefore it gained high popularity.

Due to some improvements in the design of the aircraft model IAR 316, the helicopter has become more maneuverable and more functionally effective in its application.

The IAR 316 helicopter began to be developed at the end of the 60s of the last century, and already in 1971 the aircraft made its first flight, which was very successful, and therefore, almost immediately after all the required tests, the project was launched into serial production, where he was until 1987.

The main operator of helicopters of the IAR 316 model was the Romanian Air Force, where this model was used to perform patrol and observation flights, as well as a means for training future pilots. Also, the IAR 316 helicopter established itself as a combat aircraft capable of combating small concentrations of enemy manpower, as well as armored vehicles. In service with the IAR 316 helicopter are:

  • Machine gun caliber 7.62 mm.;
  • A set of guided anti-tank missiles;

In addition to performing combat missions, the IAR 316 helicopter can also be operated for transporting a small number of people on board, or for transporting goods.

The aircraft cabin can accommodate up to 7 people, including two crew members, as well as five armed servicemen. The presence of paired control in the aircraft allows you to use the aircraft as a training tool, which was actively used until the mid-80s of the last century. Among other things, the IAR 316 helicopter can transport a small amount of cargo on its board, the only condition for which is compliance with the dimensions and not exceeding the maximum take-off mass of the aircraft of 2200 kilograms.

The power plant of the IAR 316 helicopter includes one Turbomeca Artouste IIIB gas turbine aircraft engine with a thrust of 570 hp, which in turn allows the helicopter to freely fly at distances of 540 kilometers, with a cruising flight speed of 180 km / h.

In addition to the main version of the helicopter, Romanian aircraft manufacturers also produced the IAR 317 variant, which differs from the basic version in several technical improvements, including the use of a different power plant.
