Bell ARH-70 Arapaho

Bell ARH-70 Arapaho is a US military helicopter project developed by Bell Helicopter Corporation in 2006.

The light military multi-purpose helicopter model Bell ARH-70 Arapaho began to be developed by American aviation specialists in 2004. To minimize the cost of this project, aircraft manufacturers from Bell Helicopter convinced the US military command to use the Bell 407 helicopter model as a base, which has proven itself in the commercial field of its use. In less than 2.5 years of work, American designers not only managed to develop a multi-purpose aircraft but also managed to carry out its initial tests, which, however, did not lead to the start of serial production of the helicopter due to a number of problems found during testing.

The main problem of the Bell ARH-70 Arapaho model helicopter was its poor controllability, and if in terms of maneuverability this aircraft did not cause any complaints, then when landing on limited areas, the pilot had to have high professional skills, which, in fact, did not allow using this model in the regular army of the USA, in connection with which, designers from the Bell Helicopter company were asked to improve the model and refine it.

Later, three more prototypes of the Bell ARH-70 Arapaho helicopter were created by American aircraft manufacturers, however, none of them had the required flight performance, which is why. The project was decided to close, however, at the end of 2014, unofficial data appeared that the development of the Bell ARH-70 Arapaho military helicopter continued again, however, not from the Bell Helicopter leadership? neither from the US military command, the official information was not found confirmation.

According to the flight technical characteristics of the aircraft model Bell ARH-70 Arapaho, the helicopter was supposed to be equipped with the following weapons:

  • Large-caliber 12.7 mm. a machine gun to suppress enemy manpower and combat lightly armored vehicles;
  • 2 sets of unguided missiles to destroy enemy armored vehicles and places of large concentrations of enemy manpower. 

Onboard the Bell ARH-70 Arapaho helicopter can transport 8 people, including two pilots and six military personnel, or carry an equal amount of payload in weight, which actually gave the helicopter multi-purpose use.

The power plant of the Bell ARH-70 Arapaho helicopter includes one Honeywell HTS900-2 gas turbine aircraft engine (970 hp), which allows the aircraft to accelerate to a speed of 260 km / h (maximum figure), as well as cover distances of up to 300 kilometers.
