Ankara Esenboga International Airport

Ankara Esenboga International Airport is the capital air harbor of Turkey, located 28 kilometers from Ankara. Due to the fact that the airport is actively developing, over the past 15 years, there has been a steady increase in passenger traffic, which in 2016 amounted to more than 13 million people.

History

The first aircraft began to be served at Ankara airport at the beginning of the last century, which was due to the need to establish efficient transport accessibility in the country. Nevertheless, the first flights were carried out exclusively in local directions, however, due to the increasing volume of served passengers, already in the 40s of the last century, the possibility of organizing the first flights on international flights was considered.

In 1947, the first international flight took place from Ankara airport, which connected Ankara with Athens, and later regular flights were also organized with other countries, which led to the need to expand the capabilities of the air harbor and improve its infrastructure.

At the end of the 50s, Ankara Esenboga International Airport was completely ready to receive large airplanes, which in turn ensured great interest in this region, where foreign air carriers also began to make their flights.

Over the next 30 years, from 1960 to 1990, Ankara Esenboga International Airport actively developed its capabilities, in particular, we are talking about creating the high-quality infrastructure for passengers, building VIP-terminals, cargo terminals, etc.

In 2002, the passenger flow of Ankara Esenboga International Airport reached 2,836 million passengers, while by 2007 this figure had grown to almost 5 million passengers.

Despite the fact that the original Ankara harbor was focused on servicing international flights, today, the largest volume of passengers served is domestic flights (about 88.6%).

The international air harbor has at its disposal two runways:

  • Asphalt runway, 3750 meters long and 45 meters wide;
  • Asphalt runway, 3750 meters long and 60 meters wide.

Thanks to this, Ankara Esenboga International Airport can serve class 1-4 aircraft, including the largest passenger Airbus A380 aircraft.

It has several helipads on the territory of the air harbor, which allows serving all types of helicopters.
