AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat

AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat – is a multi-purpose military Italian helicopter, developed in 2009 by the Italian aircraft manufacturer AgustaWestland.

The first AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat helicopter design work began with Italian and British design engineers in 2006 on special orders from the UK Department of Defense, to improve an earlier version of the Westland Super Lynx military helicopter. During the three-year development, the aircraft of this model almost completely changed its appearance, and significantly improved its flight performance, remaining still a multi-purpose aircraft, but more promising concerning modern requirements.

If necessary, the AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat helicopter can act as a vehicle for transportation, carrying up to 7 people (2 pilots and 5 military personnel) on board, or a payload equivalent in weight. Also, the helicopter of this model can be equipped with various types of weapons, capable of providing both fire support from the air, and become a full-fledged combat unit for fighting lightly armored ground equipment of the enemy, or an anti-submarine aircraft carrying either anti-submarine torpedoes on its board or deep bombs. If necessary, the helicopter can be based both on land and on ships, which provides it with greater opportunities for operation.

The AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat helicopter is equipped with a power plant consisting of two turboprop aircraft engines of the LHTEC CTS800-4N model, each of which is capable of developing a thrust power of 1360 hp, which in turn provides the aircraft with high load capacity (maximum take-off weight is 6,000 kilograms), as well as a fairly acceptable flight speed – about 311 km \ h. However, the maximum range of this aircraft is limited to only 775 kilometers, which does not always meet the requirements.

  • AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat AH1 – the basic production version used for land operations;
  • AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat HMA2 – version developed for the UK Navy. It is equipped with special anti-submarine weapons and can be used to transport small groups of troops.

To date, the AgustaWestland AW159 Wildcat helicopter is in service with three countries, including the United Kingdom, the Philippines, and South Korea, however, given the fact that the production of these helicopters began in 2009, experts believe that soon the prevalence of aircraft of this model will increase.
