AgustaWestland AW101

AgustaWestland AW 101 is a medium-duty multi-purpose helicopter manufactured by the Italian aircraft manufacturer AgustaWestland since 1999.

The AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter was developed thanks to the joint efforts of British and Italian engineers, and the first work on the design of a multi-purpose aircraft began back in 1985. Initially, the helicopter model AgustaWestland AW 101 was developed exclusively for military use, however, later, this aircraft also began to be actively used as a vehicle and in civil aviation, where it became somewhat less widespread, however, in fact, it was able to replace several already very obsolete equipment.

The design and construction of the AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter, by and large, resembles the design of another helicopter – Sikorsky S-61, based on which the development was carried out. Nevertheless, this aircraft has become more widespread in the military sphere, and in some cases, it is simply indispensable for the transportation of large and massive cargoes.

This airborne vehicle can also have a military purpose, in particular, the AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter is positioned as well as an anti-submarine helicopter, capable of carrying four anti-submarine torpedoes or an equivalent number of depth charges. Nevertheless, experts doubt the effectiveness of the use of this helicopter in open combat due to its sufficiently large dimensions and low maneuverability, especially since this aircraft has never been used in real combat operations.

Onboard, a helicopter model AgustaWestland AW 101 is capable of carrying up to 45 military personnel, or up to 5 thousand kilograms of payload if the aircraft is operated as a vehicle, which in essence surpasses most modern helicopters.

The AgustaWestland AW 101 power plant consists of three Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322-01 three-turbo engines, each of which is capable of developing 2100 hp thrust, which provides this machine with high load capacity and fairly acceptable flight speed, which is in the order of magnitude 310 km \ h.

Depending on the modification, the AgustaWestland AW 101 helicopter can also be used as a search and rescue aircraft, however, the maximum flight range of this aircraft is very limited, and, depending on the version, is only 830 kilometers.
