AgustaWestland Apache – attack helicopter, developed by the Italian aircraft manufacturer AgustaWestland in 1998.
The aircraft model AgustaWestland Apache was developed by Italian aircraft engineers based on the American attack helicopter Boeing AH-64 Apache. Both aircraft are very similar in appearance, however, in terms of operational capabilities and flight performance, aircraft are radically different.
The AgustaWestland Apache attack helicopter first appeared in public in 2004, however, by this time the production of aircraft of this model had already been completed, and the helicopter was actively used, although its existence was not officially announced.
Unlike the Boeing AH-64 Apache model, the AgustaWestland Apache helicopter is more maneuverable, which provides it with some advantage in military operations, which is insignificant, however. The Italian aircraft manufacturers have achieved much greater success in the field of reducing the sound created by a helicopter during flight, thereby providing the aircraft with the possibility of a surprise attack by the enemy, which is very effective.
In service with the AgustaWestland Apache helicopter are:
- Automatic 30 mm. a gun;
- A set of anti-tank or anti-aircraft missiles;
- A set of unguided missiles.
When developing a helicopter, experts decided to abandon the use of machine guns, quite effective in the fight against enemy manpower. This was due to the fact that to a greater extent the AgustaWestland Apache aircraft was planned as a means to combat ground lightly armored and armored targets.
The crew of the AgustaWestland Apache helicopter consists of two people – a pilot and a shooter, while, in fact, most of the helicopter’s weapons can be controlled by the pilot, while the shooter only provides higher efficiency when hitting targets during a battle. Due to the fact that the aircraft belongs to the class of military aircraft, transportation of people and cargo on board a helicopter is impossible.
The AgustaWestland Apache helicopter is equipped with two Rolls-Royce / Turbomeca RTM322 gas turbine engines, each of which has a thrust of 2100 hp, which together provides the aircraft with acceleration to a maximum flight speed of 365 km / h, with the ability to overcome distances up to 540 kilometers.
During its operation, the AgustaWestland Apache attack helicopter was actively used in Afghanistan and Libya, where it was able to successfully prove itself.
To date, all 68 AgustaWestland AgustaWestland Apache helicopters are in service with the UK.
